Why GitHub Copilot is Overrated: 5 Things You Should Know

As a solo founder or indie hacker, you're likely on the lookout for tools that genuinely enhance your productivity. Enter GitHub Copilot, the AI coding assistant that many claim to be a game-changer. But let's be honest: in our experience, it’s overrated. Here are five critical things you should know before diving in.

1. It’s Not a Replacement for Understanding Code

What it does: GitHub Copilot suggests code snippets based on the context of what you're writing.

Limitations: It can generate code that looks good on the surface but may not follow best practices or be optimal for your specific use case.

Our take: We’ve tried using Copilot for quick feature implementations, but we often found ourselves debugging its suggestions. If you don’t fully understand what it’s doing, it can lead to more confusion than clarity.

2. Pricing Can Add Up Quickly

| Plan | Pricing | Best For | Limitations | Our Verdict | |--------------------|----------------------|----------------------------------|-----------------------------------|-------------------------------| | Individual | $10/mo | Solo developers | Limited to personal use | Reasonable for individuals | | Team | $19/user/mo | Small teams | Costly as team size grows | Not ideal for larger teams | | Enterprise | Custom pricing | Large organizations | Requires negotiation | Only if you need full control |

What we actually use: For our indie projects, we find the individual plan manageable, but if you have a team, the costs can skyrocket.

3. It Lacks Real Context Awareness

What it does: Copilot uses machine learning to predict and suggest code.

Limitations: It often lacks the broader context of your project, leading to suggestions that may not fit your architecture or design patterns.

Our take: We’ve had better luck with manual coding when the context is complex. Copilot struggles when you stray from common patterns, which can be frustrating when you're building something unique.

4. It Can Produce Security Vulnerabilities

What it does: Copilot generates code by learning from publicly available repositories.

Limitations: This can inadvertently lead to insecure code patterns being suggested, as it doesn’t assess security implications.

Our take: We’re cautious about using Copilot for sensitive projects. We prefer to audit our code manually to ensure there are no hidden vulnerabilities.

5. It’s Not Always Up-to-Date

What it does: Copilot is designed to help you write code faster and more efficiently.

Limitations: However, its training data is static and may not include the latest frameworks or libraries, especially with updates as recent as April 2026.

Our take: We often find ourselves checking official documentation or community forums for the latest updates, which defeats the purpose of using an AI tool for speed.

Conclusion: Start Here

If you’re considering GitHub Copilot, be aware of its limitations. It can be a helpful tool for generating boilerplate code or for quick fixes, but don’t rely on it fully. For serious development, especially in unique or complex situations, stick to manual coding or consider alternatives that may offer better context awareness and security.

What We Actually Use: We typically lean towards traditional coding practices supplemented by targeted tools like code linters, or even simpler AI tools that aid without replacing our understanding.
